Have you looked at changing OPTIMIZER_MAX_PERMUTATIONS to see if this changes the plan? The default in 8.1.7 is 80000 but in 9.2.x, it has been defaulted to 2000. [Btw, Apps 11i on an 8.1.7 specifically _requires_ OMP to be set to 2000 and _complex_view_merging to TRUE]
