Just add to the previous post:

I did have maxsetsize 32G, and rman was happy with that; but it didn't like 4G. Just to see what would happen if I removed the parameter entirely, I now see save sets of:

-rw-r----- 1 oracle dba 104712904704 Jun 18 10:01
ABCD_epfok4k5_1_1_DATA
-rw-r----- 1 oracle dba 115832004608 Jun 18 10:01
ABCD_eqfok4k5_1_1_DATA
-rw-r----- 1 oracle dba 108564021248 Jun 18 09:58
ABCD_erfok4k6_1_1_DATA

So maxsetsize does something!
