I've looked at several surveys over the years and it's difficult to draw conclusions, because they never seem to define what is being measured. For example, is it...

Straight salary
Salary plus benefits
Contractor rate on W2 through consulting firm Contractor rate on 1099
Consulting rate directly to end client

Plus, some people will inflate their salary, just to make themselves look good. Like the waiter who brags that he makes $300 a night because it happened once.
