parallel query and the large pool

Oracle 9.2.0.4
parallel_adaptive_multiuser = true
parallel_automatic_tuning = true

Looking at the docs it looks like the large pool is used for message buffers if parallel_automatic_tuning = true. Is this true even if parallel is not set for the target tables? I have the above set to true but not the tables defaulted to parallel. I find that setting the tables to parallel really favours parallel table scans and it completely messes everything up.

Thanks
Mike
