Keith - I have studied this issue quite a bit. I have not heard of Andy's solution, but it sounds great. I would pursue that first. You don't mention your platform, but it looks like you are on Unix. I have found that you can create a link to your backup location and reference that link in RMAN. Then during recovery you point the link to the new location, and RMAN is fooled. You might try that as your alternative solution. If you find Andy's solution works, please let us know. Thanks.

It's been a while, but I think RMAN will recognize the environment variable BACKUP_DIR. Try setting this to the directory where you've located your backups and see if the restore will work.
