Mike,

I was DBA on a project last year that used Datastage. They requested select on dba_extents and on some other views as well (can't remember which ones though).
>From memory the "reason" was something to do with the Parallel Extender part of
the product which does lots of processing in parallel and uses information in dba_extents to help determine the number of parallel streams it will use to access a particular table.
How much real-value Datastage gains by looking at dba_extents is doubtful but it's probably true that it won't work without the select privilege.
