AIM - To do a NEW Database Setup on XP1024 Storage Box of HP with the following Application characteristics:-
Hybrid Banking Application=20
DB Size 600 GB
Large Number of Concurrent Transactions - 400 TPS (Transaction per second)
(1 Transaction =3D 3 K approx.)
Large Number of Concurrent Users=20
Write intensive application
Oracle 9.2
HP-UX

Qs. What may be HP best practices on XP1024 Storage Box for the following?
1) Optimal Emulation (OPEN-E or OPEN-9) for creating the LDEVs 2) Optimal Number of Logical Devices (LDEVs) per Volume Group (VG) w.r.t. performance.
NOTE OS Software Striping is done across the member LDEVs of a VG

3) MAX. Number of VGs per XP1024 Box
4) Should Stripe Unit Size be 64 KB, BOTH for the VG (Software RAID 0) & the underlying RAW (Hardware RAID 1+0)?
5) For Redo Logfiles which is advisable:-

  1. Separate VG containing only a Single LDEV, which is assigned to a single Port? Thus there will exist only 1 =20 level of Striping i.e. underlying Hardware RAID 1+0 across 4 Disks.=20 NOTE - Other LDEVs containing Datafiles also will be assigned to the SAME port. =20 =20
  2. Redo Logfiles to be present along with Other Datafiles on a VG which contains multiple (8-9) LDEVs. Would writes to Online Redo log files (Sequential in nature) be faster if Striped across multiple LDEVs & thus written to by=20 multiple ports versus a single port?=20 There will be 2 Levels of Striping in this Case :- 1st Striping is the Underlying Hardware RAID 1+0 Striping across 4 Disks.=20 2nd Striping is OS s/w Striping across multiple LDEVs.

NOTE - Ideally Redo logfiles should exist on RAW or NON-Striped, Mirror Volume.

Qs Since there are only 4 controller PORTS and large Number of LDEVs ( > 36), is it advisable to evenly distribute the LDEVs across the 4 ports instead of assigning only Redo Log groups to 1 controller port & remaining Database to the Other 3 ports ?

Which of the following would you consider advisable?

  1. 1 VG to contain 9 LDEVs taken from ONE RAW Array group Volume of 4-Disks (using OPEN-9 Emulation)
  2. 1 VG to contain 8 LDEVs taken from TWO RAW Array group Volumes each of 4-Disks (using OPEN-E Emulation) i.e 4 LDEVs per 4-Disk Volume.

NOTE - OS s/w Striping done across the LDEVs to create a VG.

INFO=20
Currently the XP1024 Box has the following configuration:-

Underlying RAW Hardware RAID 1+0 volume exists per set of 4 Disks (known as Array Group [AG])
9 Array Groups exist consisting of a Total of 36 Disks OPEN-9 Emulation (To create LDEVs each of size 7.3 GB) OR OPEN-E Emulation (To create LDEVs each of size 14.5 GB size) to be used to create LDEVs on the AGs
ALL Logical Devices (LDEVs) are assigned to 4 ports

Shall provide any other info required

Thanks
