Good point. On AIX with RAC you have to have an init.ora that points to the spfile so you can find it.

Ah, the chicken or the egg...

Control files are identified by the parameter (spfile/init.ora) file. If you kept the parameters in the control file, how would the database know which control files to read? And if a control file was lost? How would you edit the
control file to change the parameter to point to a different control file?

Sounds like a catch-42.
