I duplicate the target to the auxiliary of a different name then I use NID to change the dbid. I will check to see if I can really avoid using NID the next time I duplicate my database.

  Like Ruth mentioned, the NID utility can change both the db name and   dbid --> 9i only though. It is simple to use.   In a pinch, you can tar and move a db + related software to a new box   and use nid to rename/re-id it, then rman can be used successfully etc.
