Pete,
Sounds like the safest method is to avoid bfiles.

How would you sync it to a replica?

I'm sure it could be done, but it sounds tortuous.

Daniel,

All valid points. And, it gets worse, this database would have a standby database. We would have to copy the external files to the standby server. Sounds like a maintenance nightmare.
