My guess, and it's only a hunch, is that your other job isn't one of a diplomatist.

In truth, the division lines are not so clearly drawn, but often a mix of two or even all three that you mentioned, and even some that you haven't. I have expertise in data modeling, 15 years of it, that has served me well in my other roles as database developer and DBA. A lack of understanding of relational theory as well as a good data model is hazardous to the health of a database as well as the career health of any DBA involved in its definition, IMHO. I also have a mix of other areas you mention. My quest is to become the better at system DBA knowledge, as I am more experienced in data modeling as well as SQL statement tuning and PL/SQL development. I also want to increase my knowledge of Oracle on Unix and Unix in general. I have a working knowledge that could be much deeper.
