I know Mladen's question is rhetorical, but I've wondered the same thing. However, if you just set the DISPLAY environment variable to something, you can start Apache. I've used this trick to start Apache on my Linux machine from a client using TELNET, and I have=20 no X-Server running on the client machine.

Try 'export DISPLAY=3D192.168.1.1:0' and see if that works for you.

Cheers,
Mike

OK, why would a web server need X11 display? Am I missing something? = That is probably why
I adamantly refuse to run oracle's version of Apache web server. Perl = being ancient, Apache
being s***wed up as much as humanly possible, if not even more then = that, I'm not running this
stuff. I am not going to run VNC server just to be able to start Apache. = This thing is insane.
