Dennis, in the case of RAC on a system that does not support a clustered file system the init.ora contains a line that points to the spfile since it has to be built using a raw partition and will not be located in the expected default location. AIX 4.3 is such an environment. In a case like this I wonder what would happen if you used remote administration. We do not use OEM.

Paula - My understanding (just working from what somebody told me and I haven't checked the documentation) is that if the database uses the spfile, that single file will always be used when starting up the database. This was one of the purposes of spfile, to get away from the need to have distributed init.ora files. A simple test should suffice to verify that statement.
