Hmm..I stand corrected.
I could have sworn that I read somewhere that statistics numbers were constant across versions. However, a quick check of 8iR3 and 9iR2 manuals on tahiti specifically states that they can and will change.
I think I'm losing my mind,

That's not entirely true. Some of the statistic# have changed with Oracle10g for example. Granted, "CPU used by this session" is still 12, but "physical reads" is now 48 (was 40 in 9i), etc. I think it is still a good idea to join to v$statname.
