Hi Peter...

  I think this is the key to your statement... To many people do not have a clear understanding of where it would break down until it's too late... I agree that it is possible to do this on a home grown db where you have control over what happens... But, what about the next DBA who comes in and doesn't understand the limitations? Or, if you have a product that goes into the wide world and you have no control over what happens at the customer site? Too many risk factors for me...
