I agree that internals can be overwhelming, and may not always have a practical application... however a fundimental understanding of certain internals is important.

in school i'm actually calculating how many blocks are needed in different types of queries. different search algorithms used by the CBO.(actually calculating our own cost)

its a big of an overkill. intenals is nice, but unless you are going to code or design a database, there is only so much you really need to know. you can get bogged down in these details and not focus on what is really important.
