If you mis-spelt the parameter, Oracle would not start. So if it is starting fine, then there is no problem with the syntax.

3 possibilities:

  1. You are checking for trace files in the wrong directory.
  2. The instance is starting using some other pfile (or spfile).
  3. There was a discussion recently regarding Oracle not writing trace to user_dump_dest, rather to ORACLE_HOME/dbs.
