Best way to test if a listener is up, use 'tnsping'. Best way to see=20 if a database instance is up and available, try connecting to it.

Huh? I've just tested "ps -ef" sans "l" on RH9 and Gentoo, and both = grep
the listener just fine. And, BTW, that doesn't necessarily mean the listener is up, just that the process is there.
