This is the only database on the box.

New box, new oracle database installation. /etc/system is the same,
 the .profile

did dmesg - last message was from 2/5 from mounting the emc disk I did the install late 2/6 and no messages since then.

even the starter database does not start.

JUST WHEN I DO A SHUTDOWN ABOUT does it appear in the alert.log I do get a core dump in $ORACLE_HOME/dbs

umask looks fine

I did the install with unix group dba instead of oinstall. The groups are set up the same way... umask is 022

still looking. Thanks for the ideas, keep them coming.

Does your server has the same configuration as the production server? If = not then the system file should not be the same as production. Any other databases running on the test box?

Try reducing your processes limit and shared pool size to a minimum to = see if you can get the database up. After that you know it is a = /etc/system issue

Metalink note 169706.1 is quite good for specifying O/S requirements = and configs for various system set-ups.

The etc/system is set up exactly like my production box. I checked my $HOME, $PATH, $ORACLE_HOME, etc look just like my prod box. Nothing in the bdump or udump when I get the 3113. Nothing in the alert log
Do get a core dump in $ORACLE_HOME/dbs

ipcs -a gives me....

Have you checked the OS kernel parameter (semmns) setting?=20

On Solaris it will be in /etc/system file as: set = semsys:seminfo_semmns.

The install guide will have more info as to how to derive an appropriate value for this parameter.
