If home selector not correct(meaning set to 8i) and try to use 9i sql after setting correct oracle home for 9i on command line, it generates error like 'date format' not correct and oracle not working properly.

So home selector must point to 9i but connecting as sys will require password. I am handling 10-12 Windows server with 8i and 9i databases on same machine. Besides 8i does not require you to connect sys as sysdba but 9i does.
