I've set it before to prevent IP trips to the router for programs that use IP to talk to itself (like some backup programs that work over a network). But like I said, it's probably my lack of understanding of how "proper" networking is to be setup... :)

Before now, I've not heard of setting localhosts to the real IP address.

I've only seen it aliased to loopback ( 127.0.0.1 ). Why would you do otherwise?
