I'm honored. I'm also a little suprised to know that Mary and I are not the corruptive influences we thought we were. Maybe if you capitalized my name, the partition might have been more frightened, and, in its shaking would have corrupted something in the file next to it. Yeah, that's it.

Take care and have a great weekend!
Bambi.

Thats precisely what I did. Logged in as Oracle.

  1. Tried dd if=/dev/null of=/dev/vx/rdsk/.........../tools_01
  2. cat sqlnet.log > /dev/vx/rdsk/.........../tools_01
  3. echo "Mary has a little bambi" > /dev/vx/rdsk/.........../tools_01

All ran successfully. I see the timestamp on the raw volume change to current time. But the datafile is online. I can create tables on the tablespace (made of only this datafile). I can select on pre-existing tables. I can successfully do checkpoints. I can shutdown and startup, and receive no errors.

Either 9i is really robust and unbreakable, or I stay in Utopia.

After typing in all this, I used a file the same size as the datafile, and specifed the file name as the input file in the dd, and EUREKA!!! I now have a corrupted data file.

Regards
Raj

Mladen, you should have a standard disclaimer in all your replies ;-)

Did you try copying a junk file to it. dd if= of=

:) did not think corrupting something would be a problem.

How about

echo "Mary had a little lamb" > /dev/rdsk/
