Well, I don't know about it's performance, but I think this conversion doesn't require any temporary space, because the byte values of some structures in blocks have to be swapped, and this a trivial operation.

I think it may still be faster, especially if we are dealing with huge amounts of data, swapping bytes in blocks is faster than reading and parsing data through buffer cache, transferring it over sqlnet and formatting + writing it back to datablocks...
