I'm sure there are many ways to perform complex validations a shell script. And I needed a simple solution so I opted for the easy way.

Unfortunately, I'm not an expert shell programmer yet. Fortunately, I did receive many good suggestions from the list to help me progress in my quest to learn Korn Shell.

BTW, is there any chance of validating the input before it gets passed to
