Oh, hell, I'll play. The word trivia comes from the Latin "tri" (three) and "via" (road). As I understand it, back in the day when those words were bantied around, and all roads led to Rome, trading centers and little towns popped up where two roads intersected, but where three roads intersected, there were major markets, and news from far and near could be heard. This news, of course, travelled around, and was referenced as "trivia".
