I think the assumption must be that all the computers on the grid are attached to a SAN. Does that seem reasonable?

For database type stuff, one must wonder how the data itself can be handled by CPU resources scattered hither and yon. The answer comes from the fairly recent knowledge that, in our universe, every particle has a matching particle; and changing one of the particles results in a change in the other particle. Well, the solution to trying to shove data all over the grid becomes obvious: One need only establish central management of the matching particles that make up the CPU and memory of all the computers involved. Initially, this would seem to be a daunting task ... until we recall that Larry is God.
