There are a number of reasons why you might get that error. The most frequent one is probably that the NLS_LANG setting between the server and the client are different. In Oracle 8i that prevented the export from exporting existing statistics altogether. Oracle 9i does export the statistics, but gives you this warning. If I'm correct you should also have gotten the warning about "possible charset conversion".
