I am not sure if there is any such function in 9i . But you can definnitely accomplish this by writing your own function something like

    function isNum(a varchar2) returns boolean is     begin

          b := tonumber(a);
          result = true;
         return result;

    exception
    when (numer or value error) -- get proper exception
         result=false
        return result;

    end;

same can be done for isDate as well.

Server. Came across the function isnumeric, isdate in SQL Server that returns true or false if the input string is in a form that can be converted into a numeric or date type. searched in oracle help and am not able to find an equivalent. Is there any equivalent form of these functions in Oracle??
