I also function as our sysadm, and I barely remember the root password to our solaris boxes. I used to log in as root, but heard enough horror stories to figure out a way around it. Thank goodness I found the sudo utility. You still have to be careful, but you can't execute a command without KNOWING you are acting as root.

Also in regards to rm -r *. I once typed rm * while in the root directory. This was like two months into my first sysadm duties, I had just gotten over being extra paranioid. I certainly wasn't aware my current directory was /, but it was. Luckilly the previous ,always crafty, sysadm had the foresight to place a file named "-i" in the directory. Really saved my bacon when I was prompted for confirmation.
