No doubt about it, the old way is much easier.

I've had to do it often enough that I wrote some PL/SQL, SQL and Perl to more or less automate the generation of the scripts needed to mount and unmount shares, copy files, generate the controlfile script and open up the database.

Doing this with RMAN is prohibitively difficult.

My reason for doing so was to get the experience needed to restore an entire database to a new server should the old one fail, as it is the same process.

I love RMAN, but truth be told, I still find the old manual method of cloning a database to be easier somehow. Must be an old fogie.
