I've done 8.1.7 client installs on my personal machine (win2k) that was also running an 9.2 database with no troubles.

Well, I'm on Linux, not Windows, but I installed 8.1.7 on a box running 9.2 a couple of weeks ago with no problems. Didn't do anything out of the ordinary, just ran a plain ol' regular install.
