Yes you have to move them to tape and either compress or delete them once you have backed up the logs and datafiles.... Check out the Backup and Recovery Handbook by Velpuri, there are some pretty good examples there.

If you don't clean out the archive directory on occasion, the database will hang when that filesystem is filled. you won't get a message that it's hung but it will hang.
