healthcare is largely paid by the government in Canada... not paid by employers. Provincial governments pay physicians fee for service (mostly, some exceptions exist) and hospitals / facilities are paid by government, not by patients directly.

Healthcare is mostly free to Canadians, and total $ spent per capita on healthcare in Canada is lower than in the U.S..

Although companies by Blue Cross are selling additional insurance for those who do want it.

We also tend to have a bit more disposable income than Americans on average, I would like to emphasize "on average" here.

Anyway, this is OT now I think.

Might the reason be the total cost to the employer? Differences in the full coverage of health insurance and any 'social benefits' such as education cost and generally speaking the cost of living and the 'feeling-comfortable-here' factor make comparisons tricky. As much as saying that SQL Server is cheaper than Oracle.
