I don't know much about 9iAS, but one technique that has served me well when I need to learn a broad new subject like this is a glossary. Once you understand all the unfamiliar terms they use (and even familiar terms that are used in a different sense), you are well on your way to being able to take the next steps. Often software documentation includes a glossary. If not, you can construct one yourself by searching the index of the documentation and usually where the word is first used it is defined.

Then I get some index cards and put the term on one side and the definition on the other. Then study them until you can guess the term from the definition and vice-versa.

Learning the words works even better when learning GUI-based software because often you must search the menus for a function you need. If you clearly understand what the critical words mean, it is much easier to match what you need with the menu word.

Anybody that wanted to quit learning when they left school shouldn't have joined the software industry.
