P.S. The description for the type# field in dba_objects is not in the fine manual but you can see it by doing a
select text from dba_views where view_name = 'DBA_OBJECTS' ;

In general to find out information about the columns in a SYS table look at the source code for the corresponding DBA_VIEW, e.g.

OBJ$ -> DBA_OBJECTS
TAB$ -> DBA_TABLES
IND$ -> DBA_INDEXES

etc.
