I think this depends more on your OS settings/capability (and/or file system type) than Oracle.
For example, all the way back at least to Oracle 8.0.5, we've been able to use files larger than 2 GB on HP-UX with veritas file systems and 'large files' enabled. Check with your Unix admin on this for Sun.
