linux and windows2000 memory allocation

We ran into a situation here where a 4G server ran out of resources when we hit roughly 1.4G of memory used.

This because the Windows2000 OS splits available memory half and half between kernel and user processes.

Once one subtracts Windows services and Oracle user sessions' PGAs from that 2G, one ends up with less than 2G of memory available for the Oracle software.

A workaround is to purchase Windows2000 Advanced Server, which still splits memory but can do it 1G for kernel processes, 3G for user processes. Windows2000 Advanced Server costs more than the regular version though.

My question is:

How does Red Hat Advanced Server handle memory? If you have a 4G Dell server, how much of that memory can be made available to the Oracle software?

Regards,
Patrice.
