Patch 8174 in 2nd Oracle Home

I need to upgrade an 8.0.5 database to 8.1.7.4
(Solaris 2.6) Oracle will not support direct upgrade,
so I need to upgrade 8.0.5 to 8.1.7, then as a separate step patch up to 8.1.7.4 So I need 2 8i oracle home's: the 8.1.7 vanilla which I'll delete as soon as the database is upgraded, and then the 8.1.7.4, the db's permanent home.

I currently have 2 copies of 8.1.7 vanilla on 2 separate mount points, and I'm trying to apply 8.1.7.4 patchset to 1 of them. I set the environment for the correct directory tree, then run runInstaller. I consistently get the message "There are no patches that need to be applied from the patch set Oracle 8i Patchset 8.1.7.4". I assume this has something to do with the inventory location, but I don't know how to fix it.

Any ideas?
