Matthew - Oracle has to pull up each block and reorganize it. Take a look at the SET UNUSED option.

Does anyone have any timing for dropping a column in 8.1.7 (hpux11)?

We're dropping one column from a table with about 2.3 million rows using about 115 Meg of space and it's taking 50 minutes. Seems a little long to me, but this is the first time I've tried it.
