Some of you will know that I was once an economist and so resemble that
remark :( In defence I would refer the prosecution to the fact that real
science needs both experimenters - to come up with the data, and
theoreticians to work out what the hell might be happening - Physics
models this especially well.
Actual commercial enterprises don't generally employ theoretical physicists on account of their work being not directly useful to them. Any similarity between this and the distribution of "data architects" or "logical modellers" amongst general commercial enterprises and software/tools companies is purely accidental.

While I was away at the IOUG conference our "logical" data admin. group went to Orlando for a big Data Admin. conference. The one thing they said when they got back was: "The only difference between a physical DBA and a data administrator is the physical DBA carries a beeper."
Now I am leaving to soak my head in a vat of Cyanide.
