When comparing price... We just learned that in Windows2000 the OS splits memory equally between kernel and user processes, that means if you have 4G you will never be able to allocate 2G of memory for your databases on that server.

You have to purchase Windows2000 Advanced Server to change the split to 1G / 3G, which costs more I imagine.

Also, can the Intel hardware handle the throughput of RISC-based servers, including such things as plain networking connectivity?

Things to consider.

Regards,
Patrice.

I think what makes the stability difference is Unix vs. Windows - i.e. the OS more than the RDBMS.

Hi,

I think you cannot simply compare oracle on windows/solaris.     The main advantage is that oracle on solaris provide mature 64bit support, which enable large sga.And oracle running on solaris maybe more stable than oracle on windows.

Regarding performance, if they run on the same hardware(though impossible), they should perform the same.According to my personal experience, 1.4GXeon MP ~~ 900MHZ Sparc. That is not something accurate, though.
