I always describe it as "if I am doing my job right, my management
should be wondering why they pay me so much. The one time the fecal
matter hits the whirling breeze machine, and I fix it FAST with minimal
downtime and minimal loss of data, THEN they understand the costs
involved"
these are the same people who will say "oh, I don't need a backup
server, and I don't need to waste time/money on extra disks or keeping
a standby database or doing backups, because my RAID 5 disks will fix
themselves when there is a data loss".
this is the stuff actuaries make money on for insurance companies.
Predicting the probable loss against the cost of doing business.
