Here's a tale of two servers. We'll just refer to them as lnxsvr and w2ksvr.

lnxsrv has 2 gig ram, one internal OS drive, and 6 30 gig SCSI drives, used
as three mirrored pairs.

w2ksvr has 1.5 gig of ram, one internal OS drive, 3 mirrored pairs dedicated
to redo, one to oracle binaries and archive logs, and 2 more dedicated to data and indexes.

w2ksvr runs a single database.

lnxsvr normally runs 1 or 2 dev databases, but during this timeframe it is running 1 dev database, one copy of the production database from w2ksvr, and newer upgraded copy of the same database.

Two developers are connected to the prod database on lnxsvr, massaging and transporting data to the copy of the db, also on lnxsvr.

This machine also monitors all databases in the company.

And every day, the developers would complain.

"w2ksvr is not as fast as lnxsvr, can we use lnxsvr for production instead?"

To which I would simply say, 'no'.

So if performance is important...

Hi all,

we have bought the hardware already so it has been decided but where we are able to influence is the OS

should I start using Linux or W2K when

I will have three instances with total size upto 200Gig used as DW with max 20-30 users altogether.

The hardware is Compaq DL380 G3 2x2.8GHz ...

Any ideas, or is there any good links I could read some benchmarks etc...
