But Oracle did drop its price! It created Standard Edition. Most of us think that was in response to MS SQL. Just to add to the confusion, MS now offers SQL in Standard and Enterprise Editions. Maybe Oracle will offer a GNU version stripped of any features MySQL doesn't offer. They could call it "SubStandard". But the bigger question is how/if a commercial enterprise can compete with the free guys.

Today META is offering the opinion that Linux will settle down and eventually reach an equilibrium with Windoz http://techupdate.zdnet.com/techupdate/stories/main/0,14179,2913403,00.html One factor mentioned in their economic analysis is "including the price of eventual migration". No details though.

Nelson,

Are you talking about Oracle dropping their price?? Naw, never happen unless of course Hell freezes over. Who do you think is going to pay for all those racing yachts that Uncle Larry loves so much??

PS: And this is OT, but funny

A gentleman from Boston, MASS, USA dies & went to hell. Satan trying to be a good host comes over to welcome the new arrival. He finds the gentleman still in his suit, but with the jacket unbuttoned and asks how he likes it.
"Not bad." the gentleman replies, "Just like a June day." Irritated Satan goes over to the thermostat for Hell and cranks it up a bit. Later he finds our gentleman from Boston with his jacket now over his shoulder. "Warm enough for you?" he asks. "Fine." the gentleman replies, "Just like a July day in Boston." Irritated more Satan runs over to the thermostat once again & really gives it a crank.
Again he finds the gentleman from Boston, now with his tie off & shirt collar unbuttoned. "Hot enough?" he asks. "Not bad." he replies, "Just like a dog day of August." Really irritated Satan runs over to the thermostat again & cranks it down to the very stop. Instantly Hell freezes. He then wanders off in search of the gentleman from Boston, whom he finds jumping up & down for absolute joy shouting at the top of his lungs "The Red Socks won the World Series, The Red Socks won the World Series, The Red Socks won the World Series, ".

You can check the whole article at
http://www.mysql.com/doc/en/TODO_MySQL_5.0.html

Itīs still going to be a few months until an alpha release is ready though...
At least the prices should drop with all the good competition ;)

Does anyone know what language MySQL is using for stored procedures?

MYSQL BECOMES ENTERPRISE-WORTHY | eWEEK
MySQL AB is a well-respected open-source database, used by many devotees. Developers have added many new features in version 5, which they hope will make it more enterprise-worthy. The additions include support for stored procedures and triggers.
