Brian,

Tapes are also subject to heat, humidity, magnetic fields, etc... in the storage thereof which does make them unusable, but they do tend to hang around much longer than a backup to disk. For some silly reason a tape will get forgotten, but burn up an equivalent amount of disk space & sooner or later someone will notice.

Tape lasts forever, or near enough for disaster recovery purposes. I've recovered files from tapes 10 plus years old (the value of actually doing so was neglibible, but the customer was happpy). Tape is portable, well understood by a variety of backup schemes and mechanisims.

I'm currently involved in a discussion about the virtues of backups to disk AND to tape of production databases. I'm for the idea, and there are others who are only wanting to backup to disk, and want to depend on our DR server for any other recovery requirement. I'm looking for your thoughts on this topic. Anyone want to contribute some good reasons to g ahead and backup to tape anyway?
