Brad,

May I relate my Access Nightmare of the past? A used calls saying that he can't access a table in database 'A'. Of course there's no such animal running around in house and he has "no idea where the data really is because it's an Access application that some coop setup for his department". Best of all, the coop's last day of work here was last Friday & we have no phone number to contact s/he at. OK, so I get the helpdesk to install Access on my pc so I can troubleshoot and then follow the coop's instructions to install the access app. OK so far. Now I open up the access app & presto I get the error message. Open up the access db & the pass thru query is looking for a table at database 'A'. But there is NO definition of what database 'A' is. It's obviously an ODBC connection, but where does it point? It took a couple more days to find a PC that was properly running the application and then I found that there were 10 ODBC data sources that all pointed to the same Or! ac!
le DB with source names (you guessed it) 'A,B,C,D,E,F,......'. BTW, the pass thru queries did a rename of just about everything in the original source tables, just to make troubleshooting more interesting. A case of a real DUHVELOPER!!!

"Access is more front-end database yes, Access is known to be a front-end to other databases with a very rich user interface."

I know...."Isn't THAT rich." is said often when discussing Access db's..

I personally think deploying Access in a corporate environment is a large mistake.
People lock up undocumented business rules faster than you can say "WTF!" when Access hits the desktops.

Its a systems management nightmare, a productivity killer as untrained users become "duhvelopers". How many people have had to figure out what some wacko was doing their Access databases after they have been fired or quit?? How many times does someone come by and say "...can you help me get some data into Access for some reports?"

As a DBA I am very reluctant to grant people access to data for the purpose of using Access on the desktop.

The only thing I would use it for would be for quick prototyping of a application concept. Even then only if no other choice was available. Its a short term benefit app that causes longterm major problems that ultimatley cost BIG BUCKS...

It's a pariah.
