Remote DBA tasks is not a problem. Remote UNIX Admin tasks can be resolved with little co-ordination and help from local staff. In my previous job, we supported 40+ UNIX servers and 100+ databases on our client machines via 9600bps modem (from BC Canada to Everglades in Florida). On one occasion, I had to install AIX 3.2.5 from scratch when the local IBM rep wiped out everything after adding a new disk drive to the server. I faxed the connector diagram to the local Data Center Manager/CFO. His Hospital's wireman made the RS232 connector so I could connect to the Console port via modem. He then watched a blank console while I installed the OS, configured all the setup (printers, ports etc) Oracle 6.0, recovered the database from tape backups etc. He was my tape switching robot..... :)
