One would hope that they would listen to someone based on their level of knowledge, rather than any implied status caused by the employer.

Raj,  

YUP, it's ALWAYS a database problem. You just might try talking them into getting someone from Oracle Consulting to help you 'tune' the database correctly. Wonder how they'd react to an Oracle consultant torching their tail feathers??

Also let me re-iterate ... we can't convince 'them' that their code is less-than-optimal. It is the stupid database that ..
