>From the Manual:

SORT_AREA_SIZE specifies in bytes the maximum amount of memory Oracle will use for a sort. After the sort is complete, but before the rows are returned, Oracle releases memory down to the size specified by the SORT_AREA_RETAINED_SIZE parameter. After the last row is returned, Oracle releases the remainder of the memory.

Now since the memory is released you won't get a process error, and besides on a Unix machine it will just trigger the swapper into action which slows the entire machine down. Now if you want to know if the swapper is active, check out 'vmstat -s' and look for 'rotations of the clock hand'. Then check out the system's Uptime. Divide 'rotations of the clock hand' by uptime. If it's greater then or equal to 1, you've got a problem.

If it is a myth where do we find the truth?

Oracle Myth #1745

"When u set the sort_area_size for a database, it will allocate that much memory PER USER for any sort operation being performed on the database"
