One thought to add to the "Create as select nologging" suggestion that you've had.

It is likely to be quick - and if you have enough spindles in play it may be even quicker it you make it execute as a parallel create.

If you do, be careful of your choice of extent size, as each separate PX slave will behave as if it is solely responsible for creating the table. A side effect of this is that if you run with degree N, then you could easily end up with about N extents that are half-empty. Pick an extent size which leaves you with a potential wastage that isn't going to irritate you.
